Synopsis Pierre leads us through this one-day, 3-session seminar exploring the dimension of the Self and the Logos in Plato's thought. The Self is both profoundly personal and transcendent since it is both the experiencer and the experienced. Dialogue(s): republic Chapters: book01 Sections: 327a-331d This is the first in Pierre's latest (2018) series of Friday-night talks on Plato's The Republic . Having not read through The Republic as a group in some 12 years, we return to it -- this time informed by our reading of The Parmenides and looking for occurrences of αὐτὸς (i.e., 'autos':Self), which Juan has re-translated, and considering the difference such translation makes on our understanding of this great work, and how we...

Dialogue(s): republic Chapters: book07 Sections: 516d Just a bit of a 'winter solstice' celebration. Folks brought food, and someone a bottle of Sandeman, which got Pierre to reminisce about how he spent his winter vacation at St Johns in 1948, reading Plato and Homer with fellow students.  He reads from Book 7 of Plato's Republic ( 516d ), which hit him way back when as proof positive that The Republic could not just be about Plato designing an ideal political state. Pierre challenges a...

Synopsis Another great Saturday morning having coffee with Pierre and a few members of the NS. I did not have energy to set up the camera today, so it was again audio-only. I did snap a couple of photos (in the JPEG section of the Download Options menu of this page). Today, uncharacteristically, we explored no dreams. So room was left open to philosophical discussion -- of which there was a great deal. Also, uncharacteristically, we went out to 4 hours (from 10 'til 2) -- the longest Saturday...
